Department of Preliminary Education for Foreign Citizens

ASU’s Department of Preliminary Education for Foreign Citizens offers a special educational program for foreigners who would like to study at ASU, but do not speak Russian either at all, or not well enough.

Studies at our Department take place within one academic year (i.e. 10 moths, two terms). Since many students come to Astrakhan late, we correct the plans of teaching them Russian by making the program more intensive. At the same time, the total number of academic hours for teaching Russian must be at least 680 hours. The only form of education is full-time, and the studies require payment.

During the academic year the students acquire basic skills in Russian pronunciation and get the minimal vocabulary to live and to study in Russia (to talk with Russian people in everyday life, to read artistic and scientific literature, to understand TV and radio programs, to be able to take part in seminars and in practical workshops, to understand lectures, and so on).

Besides learning Russian, we also teach a number of disciplines that meet the future specializations of our foreign students:

Our highly-skilled teachers help our students get the necessary knowledge in different disciplines, which is necessary for entering Russian universities. This level of knowledge is equal to that of Russian common secondary schools.

Besides, during the 2nd term all our foreign students study Russian specialized vocabulary which corresponds to their future specialization.

At the end of the academic year our students take an examination in Russian as a foreign language in accordance with Russian Federal Standards. After they have passed this examination, they get the Certificate of Moscow’s HQ for Examination of Foreign Citizens. This Certificate shall give them the right to enter Russian Universities.

Graduates of our Department take written entrance examinations (held as tests) in their profile disciplines. After that they are admitted to study at ASU.

Our Department of Preliminary Education has got its own language laboratory equipped with 10 workplaces and with the most advanced software to learn Russian. Besides, we have a computer class, whose facilities include:

The classes are held 6 days a week, from six to eight academic hours a day. One academic hour is equal to 45 minutes. Student groups cannot be more than 8 people if they are taught the Russian language, and not more than 15 people for all the other disciplines.

All our students live in comfortable hostels at the university campus.

The educational program includes different entertaining events. Our foreign students can learn much about Russian customs and traditions, take part in national holidays and in sport games, and tell their Russian friends about their own customs and traditions.

Our students are always welcome to go in for sports – volleyball, football, basketball, and so on.

As for the medical treatment, our foreign guests can receive it in municipal hospitals and at ASU’s first-aid post.
